Home Parish: Saint Philomena Catholic Church
Home School: Peoria Notre Dame High School
Background:
Katy Krieg grew up in Roseville, IL and was raised strongly in the Christian/ non-denominational
faith. She attended Monmouth-Roseville High School, then went to Spoon River College for
Medical Assisting. After graduating, Katy married Casey Krieg, moved to Carthage, IL and soon
had two children, Nora (9) and Wade (6). While living in Carthage and working at Carl Sandburg
Community College, she realized she wanted to go back to school to finish her degree in
teaching.
After earning her undergraduate degree from Western Illinois University, Katy started teaching
middle school science in Carthage and finishing her online teaching degree. During Covid,
things really changed. In 2021, Katy’s husband, Casey, passed away suddenly. At this time,
Katy’s faith really took the driver's seat and paved the way. This is when Katy decided to earn
her master's degree in special education and further her career. Katy is finishing up her masters
degree in special education currently, while teaching at Norwood Elementary School in Peoria.
Katy and her two kids moved to the Peoria area in the summer of 2024. Katy is engaged to her
fiance, Joey O’Brien, they reside in Peoria and will be married in November of 2025.
Working in both general education and special education has given Katy a unique opportunity
and perspective of every child as a whole. Katy’s daughter has an IEP and this is what
motivated her to teach and advocate for every child to be inclusive. Katy and Joey are extremely
involved in their children’s education and personal lives and love the community around them.
This fall, their children will move from public education to Catholic education and they hope and
strive for every child to feel welcome, loved, and included.
Katy fully supports and embodies the values and beliefs of the FIRE foundation and is so
excited to be on the board. Through the FIRE foundation we can help each other embrace
differences, raise awareness, and praise God.
